A Letter From Rick Yaverbaum, MSW, LCSW
Welcome to my Winter newsletter.
This issue focuses on fear and the impact it has on our behavior and overall functioning. Why do we become fearful about some situations or issues that we face? What can we do about it?
Sometimes our fears are moderate and we are able to push through them and respond appropriately.
Some fears are truly reality based, es- pecially in our world today. How can we manage those feelings and do the things we want to do in life?
However, sometimes our fears hinder our growth and development. They
limit our experiences and choices in life. Surely you know people who will not fly in airplanes or will not partake in other activities due to fears they are unable to overcome.
At times our fears can become quite intense, preoccupying us and paralyz- ing our ability to make decisions. We may take a stressful situation and find ourselves "catastrophizing," imagining a horrible "worst case scenario" when the situation we face is really not so dire. Yes, fears and anxieties can damage our abil- ity to function and our quality of life.
The good news is that this does not have to be the case. Psychotherapy offers effective methods and coping skills to help us not be captive to limiting, painful and irrational fears.
I hope you find this newsletter helpful and as always, feel free to contact me with any questions or to set up a consultation
